Here’s a guide to getting to the ByWard Market using active transportation:

O-Train

• Line 1 (LRT): If you’re between Blair or Tunney’s Pasture, O-Train Line 1 can easily take you to the ByWard Market. Get off at Rideau Station and take the exit to William Street. 

• Line 2 (LRT): If you’re between Riverside South and Little Italy, the O-Train Line 2 can easily take you to Bayview Station where you can transfer to  Line 1 to Rideau Station. 

• Line 4 (LRT): If you’re down by the airport, the O-Train Line 4 can take you to South Keys where you can hop on Line 2 and head towards the ByWard Market. 

Buses

OC Transpo offers a variety of routes throughout the city to get riders to or near ByWard Market. With so many options, buses are a great alternative to driving your car downtown. You can visit the Travel Planner on the OC Transpo website or download the Transit app to help navigate the bus system. 

Cycling

Ottawa is a bike-friendly city with well-maintained dedicated cycling lanes. Additionally, the downtown area has bike parking for people to chain their bikes to while exploring the ByWard Market. For those who don’t own a bike, there are also a couple of places to rent one

• Escape Bike Rentals: Located at 65 Sparks Street, Escape Bike Rentals is a great option for bike rentals. With options of renting for one hour up to two weeks, it is very versatile. Additionally, rented bikes come with a helmet, lock, map and a bag or basket. 

• RentABike: Located at 2 Rideau Street, below the Plaza Bridge, RentABike is another great option for bike rentals. With options of renting for one hour up to three weeks, so many bike options and repair services, it makes biking around Ottawa easy. Additionally, rented bikes come with a helmet, lock and map.

Taxis and Ride-Sharing 

If you want a more private trip down to the ByWard Market, a taxi or ride-sharing service can do the trick.

• Blue Line and Capital Taxi are two reliable taxi services in Ottawa. With both services, you can book via calling, texting or booking online.

• Uber is a great on-demand service. As long as you have the app, you can request a ride from wherever you are down to the market. 

Walking 

The ByWard Market is close to many other areas downtown, so walking can be a wonderful way to enjoy the many exciting areas around the ByWard. If you’re spending the day in Gatineau, the Alexandria Bridge has a walking path that takes you down near the market. Other places like the University of Ottawa campus and Major’s Hill Park are also within walking distance. So, regardless of where you are downtown, make a stop in the ByWard Market district. Take a look at this map for more trails around downtown. 

E-Scooters

For those who want to zip around the city, e-scooters are a great option. Ottawa has partnered with Bird and Neuron, two app-based e-scooter companies. After downloading the app, you can locate the closest e-scooter, pay and start riding. Another option is renting an e-scooter. Escape Bike Rentals offers e-scooter rentals for one hour up to three days, including a helmet and map. 

Walking Tours 

If you want to learn more about the ByWard Market and downtown, here are some walking tours that are offered. 

• Ottawa Walking Tours: Book a spot on the guided Historical Highlights Tour and learn all about the history of downtown Ottawa. In a group, walk around downtown and learn about the capital's history. This guided tour is two hours long and $35. Dress accordingly, tours run rain or shine. 

• Ottawa’s Hidden Stories: Download the audio tour and learn about the hidden history of downtown Ottawa. This audio tour can be done alone or with a group. The tour takes an average of one hour and is $10.

The ByWard Market District Authority (BMDA) is recruiting two members to join the Business Advisory Committee (BAC). Below, you can find information regarding the mandate and eligibility criteria to become a member as well as the application process.  

Mandate  

The BAC is an Ad Hoc Committee of the Board of the Municipal Services Corporation, also known as the ByWard Market District Authority (BMDA). The BAC will act as a conduit between the BMDA Board, and the business community located within the ByWard Market District Operational Boundary.  

Members of the BAC will have the following responsibilities:  

• Receive market intelligence, feedback, and guidance from ByWard commercial property owners and businesses regarding marketing, communications, programming, safety, operations, and other related issues.  

• Provide that information to the BMDA Board via the BAC Chair to inform decision-making and enhance the commercial environment in the ByWard Market. 

• Represent the best interests of the majority of ByWard Market businesses to the BMDA Board. 

• Empower the ByWard Market business community to explore and propose viable ideas, concepts, and solutions for district improvement. 

• Encourage stewardship through business participation in district promotions, events, safety, and security initiatives, and through contribution to overall aesthetic and experience-based offerings. 

The BAC mandate is advisory in nature, meaning that the BMDA Board, through consensus, will have the final decision-making authority. 

Member Eligibility Criteria  

• Be the owner/or corporation-appointed representative of a business and/or commercial property within the ByWard Market District Operational Boundary,  

• Be a commercial tenant of a property located within the ByWard Market District Operational Boundary; and  

• Be at least 18 years of age, 

• Not be a child, spouse/partner, family member, or directly/indirectly related to a BMDA Board member or City Council member; and  

• Not be an employee of the City of Ottawa, its agencies, or corporations (or their subsidiaries).

Mandat

Le CCA est un comité Ad hoc attache à l’entreprise de service municipale, aussi appelée l’Autorité du District du Marché By (ADMB). Le CCA agit comme liaison entre le conseil administratif de l’ADMB, et la communauté d’affaires localise dans les frontières opérationnelles du district du Marché By.

• Recevoir l’intelligence de marché, les rétroactions, et conseils de la part des propriétaires commerciaux du ByWard et des commerçants sur le marketing, les communications, la programmation, la sécurité, les opérations et toute autre problématique.  

• Rapporter ces informations au conseil administratif du ADMB pour informer des décisions prises et améliorer l’environnement commercial dans le Marché By. 

• Représenter les meilleurs intérêts des commerçants du Marché By auprès du conseil administratif de l’ADMB. 

• Dynamiser la communauté commerçante du Marché By afin d’explorer et de proposer des idées et solutions locales pour l’amélioration du district.  

• Encourager l’intendance par la participation des commerçants aux promotions, évènements, la sureté, les initiatives de sécurité ainsi que la contribution de l’esthétique général et les offres expérientielles du district. 

Le mandat du CCA est de nature consultatif, c’est-à-dire que le conseil d’administration de l’ADMB aura l’autorité de décision finale. 

Critères d’éligibilité pour devenir membre   

• Être le propriétaire/ou le représentant nommé du commerce ou de ses locaux commerciaux au sein des frontières opérationnelles du district du Marché By, 

• Être un locataire commercial d’une propriété au sein des frontières opérationnelles du district du Marché By ; et  

• Être âgé d’au moins 18 ans, 

• Ne pas être l’enfant, le conjoint/partenaire, membre familial, ou directement/indirectement lié aux membres du conseil d’administration de l’ADMB ou d’un membre du conseil municipal ; et  

• Ne pas être un employé de la ville d’Ottawa, ses agences ou ses entreprises (ou ses filiales).

Former refugee Aeman Alkadour sells his sweets at three Ottawa shopping centres, two farmers' markets and in the ByWard Market.

Aeman Alkadour arrived in Ottawa in 2016 with his wife and children after fleeing Syria in 2012. He’s 40 now, but as a trained pastry chef from a family of sweets-makers, he has been concocting treats since he was a teenager.

Of course, there was a variety of live music on the George Street Plaza.

Organizers provided a number of harvest displays around the Heritage Hall complete with hay, corn stalks, huge pumpkins, and a 14-ft (four-metre) skeleton.

First and foremost, throw your idea of price out the window. This is a matter of preference. Some of us want a cheap beer in a local dive, while others need a well-crafted cocktail after a long day. Lucky for you, this list includes both.

Of course, having a comfortable seat is an obvious want, but to me it can be outweighed immensely by good service and a good vibe. Perhaps most importantly, the food needs to be good. This may seem obvious, and that’s because it is.

All in all, the marriage of an attentive bartender serving up a quality drink of your choice with good food in a cool place means your experience is bound to be exactly what you need.

Downtown

Chez Lucien – 137 Murray St., Ottawa

I had to start this list with a classic. Chez Lucien would be a television director’s first choice for shooting a buddy flick in Ottawa, where the protagonist spends much of his time with his friends at the local bar. This is Family Guy’s The Clam, How I Met Your Mother’s MacLaren’s, and Paddy’s Pub in Always Sunny.

The classic vibes are only enhanced by the selection of local and international beers and you won’t go hungry trying any of the elevated pub menu items, none more infamous perhaps than the Chez Lucien burger, fries and salad combo that has kept Ottawans happy for years. The Chez Lu experience is excellent in general, but is best when sitting at its beloved wooden bar.

The Dog Fashion Show, hosted by CTV’s Stefan Keyes, and special guest judges Rideau-Vanier Councillor Stéphanie Plante, owner of Stunning Fashion, Mandy Gosewich, Operations Manager at Ottawa Venues, Susan Macleod, and Angie Seymour with AMTI Models. This fun competition will feature stylish pups strutting their stuff, with prizes awarded to the best-dressed dogs. Hello, wonderful people of Ottawa! It's me, your favourite Hydrant Fountain. That’s right, I'm back again this summer and ready to make a splash in communities across our great city.

You’ll hardly recognize me as I’ve undergone a stunning transformation. I have a fabulous new look that's bound to turn heads. So, get your cameras ready as my reveal is truly going to be selfie-worthy!

I knew you would love it! Since the day I first hit your streets, you have always been my biggest fans. Your encouragement is truly heartwarming.

I may have a new look, but my main mission remains the same: provide safe and delicious drinking water to each and every one of you. Whether you're out for a stroll in the park, attending a local event, or just rolling by on your way home from work, I'll be there, ready to quench your thirst and hopefully put a smile on your face.

The next time you’re downtown with a hankering for tacos, you have to check out Corazón De Maíz in the Byward Market building. The menu has burritos, quesadillas, burrito bowls and great chips and guac, but the tacos are the star. The best option is to get 3 tacos for $18, and you choose your filling. The slow cooked chicken, beef and pork are all juicy and flavourful so you can’t really go wrong. There is a vegetarian option as well, of course. I like to get one of each meat, and each taco has refried beans, pico do gallo, onions and comes with a side of guacamole. The pork  is probably my favourite, because I’m just a sucker for some good cochinita pibil. The tacos are stuffed full, and you can add one of their house made gluten free, vegan hot sauces for some punch.

They make horchata and hibiscus iced tea as well, and I cannot recommend them enough. The horchata is creamy and rich with a hint of spice that makes it the perfect Mexican treat, while the hibiscus tea is fruity and tangy and very refreshing on a hot day. You can eat in at one of their small bright tables, or take the tacos to-go to enjoy in Major’s Hill Park or a bench in the market like all good street tacos are meant to be savoured.

Chaque année, pendant la période des fêtes, le marché By se transforme en un lieu de fête, attirant des milliers de visiteurs à la recherche de cadeaux uniques, de mets délicieux et de la joie des fêtes.

Aperçu du poste:

Nous sommes à la recherche d'un(e) coordinateur(trice) du marché des fêtes dynamique et organisé(e) pour superviser la planification, l'exécution et le succès du marché des fêtes du marché By. Le candidat idéal aura une passion pour la gestion d'événements, d'excellentes compétences organisationnelles et un flair pour la création d'expériences de vacances mémorables.

Principales responsabilités:

1. Planification et coordination des événements:

   • Élaborer et mettre en œuvre un plan détaillé pour le marché des fêtes, y compris la disposition des vendeurs, la planification et les activités de spectacle, en collaboration avec l'équipe de gestion du marché.

   • Assurer la coordination avec les artisans locaux, les vendeurs et les stands de nourriture afin de garantir une expérience de marché diversifiée et de haute qualité.

   • Planifier et organiser des activités, des spectacles et des attractions sur le thème des fêtes afin d'améliorer l'expérience des visiteurs.

2. Marketing et promotion:

   • Travailler avec l'équipe de communication pour élaborer et mettre en œuvre une stratégie promotionnelle visant à attirer les visiteurs au marché des fêtes.

   • Créer un contenu attrayant pour les médias sociaux, les bulletins d'information et d'autres supports promotionnels.

   • Coordonner avec les médias locaux et les influenceurs pour générer un buzz et une couverture de l'événement.

3. Expérience du client:

   • Recueillir les commentaires des vendeurs et des visiteurs afin d'améliorer continuellement l'expérience du marché.

   • Créer une atmosphère accueillante et festive qui incarne l'esprit des fêtes.

Qualifications et compétences:

• Expérience de travail dans un environnement communautaire tel qu'un marché public ou agricole.

• Une expérience dans la planification et la coordination d'événements est fortement souhaitée.

• Expérience du service à la clientèle.

• Connaissance des principes de base de la comptabilité et des systèmes et procédures de gestion de bureau.

• Excellentes compétences en communication et en relations interpersonnelles.

• Organisé(e) et capable de définir des priorités et de gérer plusieurs tâches à la fois.

• Bilingue (français/anglais).

• Disposé(e) et capable de travailler à des heures irrégulières, y compris le soir et les week-ends.

• Bonne compréhension des marchés publics, du tourisme et des milieux d'affaires.
